Most people who sign up for the Valley of Flowers and Hemkund Sahib trek spend their time thinking about the scenery ahead. Dr Geetha Samak and her husband found themselves thinking about something else.
Would they be able to complete it?
The couple had travelled extensively before, but this was different. The trek involved multiple days of walking, high-altitude terrain, steep ascents, and long hours on mountain trails. As senior citizens, they knew the journey would demand more than enthusiasm. It would require preparation, determination, and a willingness to keep moving even when the trail became challenging.
Six days later, they had their answer.
Preparing for a Trek They Had Never Attempted Before

Before the journey even began, the couple spent time understanding what lay ahead. The Valley of Flowers and Hemkund Sahib trek is often described as one of the most rewarding experiences in the Himalayas, but it is also one that demands respect. The altitude increases steadily, the weather can change without warning, and some sections require patience more than speed.
Fortunately, with the trek expert Yash's guidance provided by the Thrillophilia team, much of the uncertainty was removed. Detailed instructions on physical readiness, packing, acclimatisation, and trekking expectations allowed them to approach the experience with confidence rather than anxiety.
The journey started from Rishikesh and continued towards Joshimath, with the mountains gradually growing larger outside the vehicle windows. The long drive through Uttarakhand's winding roads offered the first glimpse of the landscapes they would soon be exploring on foot.
By the time they reached Joshimath, the excitement had started to outweigh the doubts.
Walking Into the Valley of Flowers

The trek to Ghangaria served as the gateway to the adventure.
Mountain trails replaced roads, rivers accompanied the route, and every hour seemed to bring a different view. The pace was steady rather than rushed. Fellow trekkers exchanged conversations during breaks, local tea stalls provided welcome pauses along the way, and the mountains quietly reminded everyone that there was no reason to hurry.
The following day brought the much-anticipated trek to the Valley of Flowers.
For years, Dr. Geetha had seen photographs of the famous valley. Yet no image seemed capable of preparing visitors for the experience of standing there in person. Surrounded by mountains and carpeted with colourful blooms, the valley felt almost untouched by time. The trail wound through meadows filled with vibrant flowers, while clouds drifted slowly across the surrounding peaks.
It was the kind of place that encouraged people to stop walking every few minutes, not because they were tired, but because they wanted another look.
The climb required effort, but the reward felt immediate. Every turn revealed another section of the valley, another burst of colour, and another reason to continue moving forward.
The Day Hemkund Sahib Tested Their Resolve
If the Valley of Flowers inspired wonder, Hemkund Sahib demanded perseverance.
The route to the revered Sikh pilgrimage site climbs sharply to an elevation of over 14,000 feet. The air becomes thinner, the ascent steeper, and every step requires a little more effort than the last.
Many trekkers measure this day in kilometres. Others measure it in rest stops.
For Dr. Geetha and her husband, it became a lesson in patience.
The strategy was simple. Walk steadily. Take breaks when needed. Focus on the next section of the trail rather than the entire climb ahead. Slowly, the landscape began to change. Snow-capped mountains appeared in the distance, the air grew cooler, and signs of civilisation became fewer. Then, after hours of climbing, Hemkund Sahib finally came into view.
Nestled beside the crystal-clear lake and surrounded by towering peaks, the site carried a sense of calm that immediately justified the effort required to reach it. Pilgrims sat quietly near the water, trekkers paused to absorb the moment, and conversations naturally became softer.
For many visitors, the destination itself is memorable. For Dr. Geetha and her husband, however, the journey to get there may have been even more significant.
Because by then, they had already proven something to themselves.
Notes from the Thrillophilia Valley of Flowers Trek Team
Trekking in the Himalayas requires more than simply booking a route. Preparation, logistics, transport, accommodation, acclimatisation, and on-ground support all play an important role in ensuring a smooth experience.
For this journey, Yash Negi and Divyanshu remained closely involved in supporting the travellers throughout the trek, while Deepak ensured comfortable and well-managed transfers between Haridwar, Joshimath, and back. Their coordination helped the couple focus on the experience rather than the logistics.
The team also provided detailed guidance before the trek, helping the travellers prepare physically and mentally for the challenges ahead. That preparation proved especially valuable given the altitude and nature of the route.
In her own words:
"The trek to VOF and Hemkund Sahib was a memorable, unique experience of my life. The tour was well planned. My husband, Dr Samak, and I are senior citizens and were thinking of how it will work. But luckily, we have been taken care of very well by the trip managers, Mr Yash Negi and Mr Divyanshu. Accommodation at Gangaria was not up to the mark. Otherwise, fair everywhere. The Haridwara to Joshimath to-and-fro journey was excellently managed by Mr Deepak in the driving seat of the TT. Very nice company, and we discovered we have more strength than we thought. Detailed instructions and information about trek preparation given by Thrillophilia helped us to prepare well physically, mentally and in all respects."
By the end of the trek, the Valley of Flowers and Hemkund Sahib had delivered exactly what they promised: unforgettable views, spiritual moments, and memories that would last a lifetime.
But perhaps the most meaningful discovery was not found in the mountains at all.
It was the realisation that they were capable of far more than they had imagined.
