Sarah’s Iceland Trip Review with Thrillophilia

When my partner and I got married, we made a promise — that no matter what life threw at us, we would never stop dating each other.

Our vow was to make time for adventures and grand gestures, always keeping the excitement alive. But last year, life got in the way. A family crisis took our attention, and our annual vacation had to be put on hold.

So, this year, we knew it had to be something special,  something extraordinary to make up for the lost time. And what could be more grand than Iceland, with its surreal landscapes and the mystical Northern Lights?

So, without wasting a single moment, we booked our trip with Thrillophilia, and from the moment we stepped foot in Iceland, we felt like our vow was renewed all over again.

Golden Moments

Our Icelandic adventure began with a trip around the Golden Circle, a circuit that weaves through some of Iceland’s most iconic landscapes. As we stood at the edge of Thingvellir National Park, I remember my partner’s eyes lighting up. There was something magical about being surrounded by the ancient Rift Valley, a place where continents collide.

From there, we made our way to the powerful Gullfoss waterfall. I thought I’d seen beautiful waterfalls before, but nothing compared to this. The roaring water cascaded down in a thunderous wave, mist rising like steam in the cold air. We both stood there, transfixed.

“This is insane,” he whispered, and I knew he meant it. It was one of those moments that felt too big for words.

Then came the most interesting and spectacular site I have ever seen in my entire life - the geysers, a beautiful natural phenomenon. Watching the ground rumble and spurt boiling water into the air was a rush.

Every few minutes, we’d brace ourselves for the next eruption, and every time it came, we’d laugh and cheer like kids on a rollercoaster.

Floating Away Our Worries

I’d read about the Blue Lagoon and seen photos, but nothing quite prepared us for stepping into those warm, milky blue waters for the first time.

Surrounded by volcanic rocks, it felt like we’d entered a dreamscape. The water was warm, contrasting with the cold air around us, and as we waded further in, the world around us seemed to disappear.

We smeared on silica face masks, laughing at how ridiculous we looked, ghostly white against the otherworldly blue. My partner made faces at me through the steam, his laughter echoing across the lagoon. “This place is pure magic,” he said, and I couldn’t agree more.

Floating with nothing but the mist and silence around us, was bliss. We both just let ourselves drift, not needing to talk, simply enjoying the feeling of being together in such a surreal, peaceful place.

Dancing with the Aurora

Seeing the Northern Lights was one of the biggest dreams we’d had for this trip. But as any seasoned traveller knows, the aurora is a shy phenomenon — it doesn’t appear on command. Each night, our guide checked the forecast, and each night, we went to bed with our fingers crossed, hoping that tonight would be the night.

Then, on one particularly chilly evening, there was a knock on our cabin door. I remember it so clearly — the frantic banging, our guide’s voice shouting, “Hurry! The lights are out!”

We stumbled out of bed, grabbing jackets and boots, and ran outside without a second thought. And there they were, stretching across the sky like ribbons of green and purple light, swirling and dancing in the most breathtaking display I’d ever seen.

As we stood there, staring up in awe, my partner wrapped his arms around me. “If you haven’t seen the Northern Lights,” I said, feeling my voice catch, “you haven’t seen the most beautiful thing in the world.”

The lights painted the sky for what felt like forever, but also not nearly long enough. When they finally faded, we were left speechless, feeling like we’d just shared something sacred.

It was a night we’ll never forget, a memory we’ll carry with us for the rest of our lives.

Iceland, A Love Affair with Nature

As if the Golden Circle and Northern Lights weren’t enough, Iceland had more in store for us. We went to Reynisfjara, the famous black sand beach, a place so stark and wild that it felt like stepping onto another planet.

Towering basalt columns rose from the beach, and the waves crashed with a fury that reminded us of nature’s untamed power.

The adventure continued as we explored the lava caves. The guides handed us helmets and flashlights, and as we ventured into the dark, winding tunnels, I felt a surge of excitement. The caves were damp, eerie, and quiet, and we clung to each other as we made our way through.

At one point, we turned off our lights and stood there in complete darkness, just the two of us in this silent, ancient place. It was almost spiritual, as though we were connected to the heart of Iceland itself.

Leaving the caves, we felt exhilarated, alive, and more connected than ever. These experiences, the thrill, the beauty, the quiet moments — were exactly what we’d promised each other we’d keep chasing. And in Iceland, we’d found them all.

As our trip came to an end, we found ourselves feeling both full and a little wistful. Iceland had given us more than we could have dreamed of, and thanks to Thrillophilia’s seamless planning, we’d been able to simply enjoy every moment without a single worry.

Looking back, I realise that Iceland didn’t just fulfil our promise to each other; it renewed it. We left with full hearts, an unbreakable bond, and the quiet assurance that no matter what life throws our way, we’ll always have this incredible adventure.
