Echoes of Youth, Bridging the Years: Ajay’s Meghalaya Trip Review with Thrillophilia
Ajay and his wife sat at the end of the double-decker living root bridge, catching their breath after a challenging trek. As they rested, Ajay put his hand inside the bag and pulled out a small bundle wrapped in an old cloth. Inside was a photograph of themselves, much younger, on another adventure long ago. They both smiled, tracing the edges of the picture with their fingers.
The discovery of this photograph had set them on a path to relive those past adventures, and the spark had brought them to Meghalaya.
A month earlier, they’d been organising their old albums, stumbling across this particular snapshot. It was taken on a hilltop, with bright skies above and a hint of mischief in their eyes. That day, memories came flooding back: the thrill of exploration, the shared laughter, the quiet moments just the two of them against the giant world. Ajay’s wife had sighed, “How young we were… and fearless.” After a few quiet moments, Ajay had turned to her with a twinkle in his eyes.
“Why not do it again?”
And so, their adventure began.
“The Start of a New Adventure”
They landed in Guwahati, breathing in the crisp air of the northeast, eager to relive that long-lost thrill of travelling. They were warmly received by the representative of Thrillophilia who drove them to Shillong, Meghalaya’s capital. The town welcomed them with its green hills and misty air. They walked through the town’s vibrant markets, enjoyed momos and local Khasi dishes like Jadoh, and spent the day soaking up the beauty of the Scotland of the East.
“Misty Marvels of Cherrapunjee”
The next morning, they began their journey to Cherrapunjee, known for its rain-soaked charm. The winding mountain roads offered the best views of towering waterfalls and deep green valleys. Ajay and his wife made a stop at Nohkalikai Falls, the tallest in India, and stood together as the mist from the waterfall filled the air around them.
“The world feels big and beautiful here,” she said, reaching for his hand.
This wasn’t just a journey through Meghalaya, but through the memories and emotions they’d cherished for decades.
“A Path Less Taken: Laitlum Canyon”
Their next stop was Laitlum Canyon, where they stood in complete disbelief, gazing at the expansive valleys below. The silence was profound, broken only by the occasional chirping of birds. Standing on the canyon’s edge, they felt a sense of freedom, as if they were on the edge of the world. They took their time here, lost in the view and each other’s company.
The landscape was rugged, vast, and, like their relationship, was beauty shaped by time.
“The Challenge of the Nongriat Trek”
The real test of their adventurous spirit came with the trek to Nongriat’s double-decker living root bridge. It was a descent of thousands of steps through unpredictable forest terrain. The journey was demanding, but their guide encouraged them along the way, pausing for breaks now and then. When they finally reached the bridge, they were speechless at the intricate tangle of roots, a bridge woven by nature itself.
Sitting beside the bridge with the picture in hand, Ajay whispered,
“While posing for this picture, did you ever imagine that 35-30 years down the line, we will be holding the photograph after completing a tiresome trek with each other? My dear, we’re still those young adventurers by heart and our love for each other has only grown over the years.”
She smiled, leaning against him, and they both knew that while time had changed them, it hadn’t dulled their aspiration to explore the world together.
“The Beauty of Simplicity: Mawlynnong”
Their next destination was Mawlynnong, known as Asia’s cleanest village. As they walked through its well-decorated paths lined with blooming flowers and bamboo houses, they admired how the entire village was living in harmony with nature.
They climbed the bamboo skywalk, soaking in panoramic views of the Bangladeshi plains below. This was a place where life moved at a slower, gentler pace, giving them a chance to savour the journey together.
“Magic on the Water: Dawki”
Their tour further led them next to Dawki, where the emerald waters of the Umngot River sparkled beneath them. They took a boat ride on the crystal-clear river, feeling as though they were gliding through the air.
Ajay’s wife was surprised by the transparent water through which they could see pebbles on the riverbed. Hand in hand, they soaked in the beauty around them, feeling the calm waters ease away the exhaustion of the trek.
“This feels like a dream,” Ajay’s wife murmured, touching the cool water with her fingers. At that very moment, the river, the hills, and the quiet companionship between them made everything feel divine.
“Back to Where It All Began”
Returning to Shillong for their flight back, they looked through the photos they had taken- moments frozen in time from their journey. Each image was a new memory added to the journey they’d begun so many years before. Back home, they placed their recent photos alongside the old picture they had found, the one that had inspired this journey.
And now, two snapshots stood side by side- their younger selves, wild and carefree, and the couple they were today, experienced, mature, and most importantly, happy!
This journey had been a rekindling, a reminder that, while time moves forward, the spirit of adventure should never fade.
