An Odyssey to a Tropical Island: Abhishek’s Sri Lanka Trip with Thrillophilia

An Odyssey to a Tropical Island: Abhishek’s Sri Lanka Trip with Thrillophilia

Relaxing on a Sunday afternoon with my childhood best friend, I suddenly say, “I need a break!”

He couldn’t understand and asked me if everything was alright.

I tell him that all I do these days is go to work, come back home, cook a basic meal, go to sleep, and repeat the same things the next day. I felt extremely stagnant and wanted a change.

Expressing these thoughts of mine, I tell him, “Let’s go on a trip! We both need it, don’t we? I don’t even remember the last time when we went somewhere out, just the two of us.”

I added, “I miss how things were, before we got so busy with our corporate lives. We used to plan new things every Saturday and Sunday. Look at us now, remembering the old days!”

He nods in an agreement.

I asked him if he would like to go on a trip, knowing very well that he can never say no to travelling, that too, with his best friend!

As expected, he agreed in a heartbeat!

That’s how sudden and random our plan to Sri Lanka was. But ultimately, it proved to be one of the best decisions of our lives!

Both of us took a break from the daily hustle and bustle of our lives and started planning for our trip to Sri Lanka. While searching, we came across a pretty great package, offered by Thrillophilia. Without wasting a moment, we finalised all the details and booked it.

Unveiling the Wonders of Sri Lanka!
Our trip to Sri Lanka was nothing less than- EPIC!

If you ask me the best attraction of the country, hands down, it's Ambuluwawa Tower. I was not only amazed to see its stunning architectural beauty but it was also the first time where I saw a temple, kovil, mosque and church in one place.

It had around 1000 spiralling steps which we climbed to reach the top- a tiring but adventurous experience. However, once we reached the top, all the tiredness faded away in the blink of an eye. The panoramic views from the tower were to die for and extremely soothing to the eyes and the soul.

Admiring the views, we remembered our childhood days when we used to relax and chill on our terraces. We started cherishing all the fun days that we had spent together and. We realised how much we were missing all this – spending time with your best friend, talking nonsense and no one around to judge you and no pressure of work or anything else.

Another fun adventure of our trip was a short hike to the Sigiriya Rock Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  It is Sri Lanka’s one of the most iconic attractions and of course, we could not miss it. The hike was not really difficult, it was more fun actually. We even did multiple races to see who reaches first, leaving our own guide behind! Hahahahaha!

Oh, and we also got to see centuries old caves for the very first time. It was the Dambulla Cave Temple which included five different caves. If I am being honest, listening to the exciting folktales from the locals about the caves made our exploration even more exciting and fun.

Another well-known cave that we visited was the Ravana Ella Caves. As per the local narratives, this is exactly where Ravana hid Sita. There were also several engraved structures on the cave walls which were surely interesting to watch.

A Journey into the Wild!
By this time, we had explored so much, however, our trip to Sri Lanka would have been completely incomplete without exploring the wild and having a few encounters with wild animals. So, we made sure to add the Yala National Park in our itinerary.

At Yala National Park, we were given a short briefing about the wildlife safari. In between the briefing, I saw my best friend making weird faces, I understood that he was getting scared. Although it was completely safe and secured, I am sure I made it a living hell for him by jump-scaring him every minute of the safari.

Jokes apart, it was truly one of the best activities that we had done and worth every penny that we spent.

Last but not least, we also had a great deal of fun during our whale watching tour. So it is a tour that is organised in Mirissa, every year between November and April and luckily we travelled in December.

We sailed on our boat for around 3-4 hours with no sight of a whale. However, we did see a few dolphins jumping and playing around which was like a win to us.

Nostalgia Calling
Now, we are back from our trip and back to our old lives. Both of us re-joined offices, continued with the same daily routine and got lost in the daily hustle and bustle of our lives.

I guess this is what becoming an adult is like. Isn’t it strange how we used to dream of becoming an adult when we were young. And now that we have turned into the adults that we used to dream of, all of us wish to become a kid again and relive those golden days.

Well, I am happy for the fact that no matter how many days we don’t see each other or talk to each other, I have a best friend with whom I can be a kid again. Even though your lives may change, if you have the right people around you, you can always get back the same old version of yourself!
